Three Osseo Middle School students recently won awards as part of the 2016-17 VFW District 7 Patriot Pen competition. Ellen Anderson, Adedayo Onanuga and Erin Judd took first, second and third place, respectively, for their essays about “The America I Believe In.”

Dan Perzel, U.S. Studies teacher at Osseo Middle, was also awarded Teacher of the Year honors from VFW District 7 for fostering democratic principles in his students and focusing on citizenship education topics with his classes.

“My highest goal and greatest achievement is getting students to understand they have a voice, to think critically, and to develop the philosophy of ‘getting involved,’” Perzel said.

Several VFW leaders presented the awards to Perzel and his students last month, including District Commander Scott Southerland, Patriot Pen Chairman Don Herman, and District 7 Teacher of the Year Chairman Jeff Jarosz.
