New Otsego E-8 school ramping up for 2017-2018

It might not open its doors until August, and won’t welcome students until the start of the 2017-2018 academic year, but the new Early Childhood Education through Grade 8 building in Otsego rising on the western edge of that community officially began its service to the public.

On the heels of naming Kari Sampson the building’s first administrator, Dist. 728 recently welcomed future kindergarten students to Kindergarten Information Night at the current Otsego Elementary School, located on the eastern side of Otsego. Kindergarten students and families got a rundown of the school plans, some information about kindergarten preparation and some additional data about Community Education services.

Following this meeting, Sampson hosted future Otsego E-8 families at the elementary school in Otsego for a “Meet and Greet.” Families — who were contacted by the district last month — got an update on school discussion and talk about things ranging from curriculum to school colors and mascots.

The E-8 will actually open with only students in kindergarten through sixth grade in 2017, adding seventh grade in 2018 and the full complement of students in 2019. It will have early education programs from the first day of school next year.

Otsego E-8 start/end times have been determined. The student day will run from 8:15 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. for all Kindergarten through sixth grade students.

Construction should be completed shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, according to district sources and developers. In addition to naming Sampson as principal early last month, Deb Orrock became the second official staff member when she accepted the senior secretary role for the school. Other staff members will have the opportunity to apply soon as part of the district’s hiring process for all buildings.

For those who couldn’t make the meet-and-greet, you can still weigh in on everything from the mascot and school colors by sharing your input at upcoming meetings with our steering committee. The informational website for the new school is
