CROW RIVER NEWS
For the past 30 years the Rockford Ringers horseshoe pitching club has conducted tournaments along with River Days. Last Saturday was no exception when champions were crowned in six classes involving six pitchers each.
For the past three years the event was called the Holland Classic in memory of Edi and Les Holland, who always pitched in the Rockford tournaments and who both passed away in the last three years. Their son Tom and wife Robyn play in the Rockford league, along with children Kayla and Kyle. Robyn was the tournament director.
Classes are divided by ringer percentages, with handicaps given if needed. In Class A there was a three-way tie with Sig Armitage, Bill Danielson and Alan Larson posting 3-2 records. A tie-breaker involved who pitched the most above their average.
Armitage entered the tourney with a ringer average of 71.81 percent and he shot 75.20. Danielson came in at 56.47 percent and finished at 58.80. Larson started at 59.13 percent and shot 54.80 at the tourney.
Other class winners were B- Cheri Newcombe, Mike DeMars and Brian Wipper. C- Catherine Ziemann, William Creighton and Laurie Kelley. D- Charles Roeser, William Nelson and Rick Wright. E- Lyle Hilbrands, Jeff Lawrence and Ron Fadden. F- Ron Mead, Debi Pool and Robin Constance.
The club season is over, but anyone who wants to pitch is welcome to come to Riverside Park at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings through August.
