With the spring sports season finished, it seems the perfect time to have a change of pace.
Reading a couple letters to the editor in another newspaper inspired me to write this. A gentleman suggested that the NFL’s Washington Redskins should change it’s name to the Washington Pigskins.
Having grown up in Grand Forks, N.D.; I have been surrounded by sports nickname controversies. The University of North Dakota remained embroiled with local tribes, the legislature and the NCAA over the “Fighting Sioux” nickname.
UND is now the nicknameless school, which leaves more convinced of my decision to have chosen North Dakota State for college. PETA is in no rush to do anything about animal nicknames such as the Bison! NDSU plays better football too than UND.
Nonetheless, I crossed the river after earning my Mass Communication degree at NDSU to earn my MRS degree. In other words, I met my wife in the Cities and now have a one-year-old son.
Reporting on sports has been something I’ve always wanted to do, and it developed similar to my brief time here so far at the Sun Post. I took on writing the entire sports section at the high school I attended, Red River, the perennial hockey power of North Dakota. Likewise, I began here writing as a contributing writer as much as I could – more or less the whole sport section for each area.
After a busy winter of following stories such as Champlin Park’s hoops section finalists and gymnastics’ first trip to state, I became the Sports Editor at the end of April. It took spring a little while to get here, but the area teams certainly picked up the pace once it did. Stories such as Jeremy Johnson’s record-breaking state track high jump performance will provide memories for years to come.
Indeed, I’m excited to be here and it has been a privilege so far to witness so many excellent young and younger athletes. If you ever have story ideas, someone to nominate for Stars of the Week or something for my monthly column, feel free to call, e-mail, text or Tweet. Yes, I have a Twitter account for the Sun Post, @SunSportsMatt.
