After enjoying a solid regular season, a very young Maple Grove girls’ lacrosse team is setting its sight on the school’s first section championship.
The Crimson beat Blaine 12-2 in the regular season finale and are currently 8-5-0. That’s good enough for the No. 1 seed in this week’s Section 8 Tournament.
“We have had a good season with our young team,” Crimson coach Morgan Kingstedt said. “I feel that we are working more and more as a group and supportive of one another on the field. We just learned a system that I don’t that would have been possible with some of our past groups, because it requires girls to really be aware of each other on the field; that type of awareness takes time to develop and receptive girls.”
Helena Nguyen, Brittany Throndson, and Mary Perron have provided leadership for the young squad. Nguyen leads in scoring with 16 points (14 goals, two assists) Throndson had 12 (11 goals, one assist) and Hailey Herdine 11. Freshman Celina Francis has been solid in goal and Payton Olson and Breanna Blesi, both ninth graders, really stepped up when the team had some defensive absences and illnesses.
“The girls are finding out what they are made of and that is crucial as we move into Sections this week,” Kingstedt said.
The first section game for Maple Grove is Wednesday, May 28, at home, the second game is Friday, May 30, and the final is Wednesday, June 4. Games are at the high seed’s field.
