The Rush Creek fifth grade Math Master’s team earned medals in every category at their regional meet on April 26. The competition was held at Plymouth Middle School in Plymouth, where 187 students from various districts in the metro area were represented.
The Math Masters of Minnesota competition is designed to challenge students and schools to use critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities and to give recognition for academic effort and achievement. The competition event includes an individual number facts/order of operations round, four individual problem-solving rounds, and three group problem-solving rounds with team members cooperating over the solutions. The competition lasts approximately three and a half hours.
The team was coached by Laura Thompson, Gifted Education Instructor at Rush Creek Elementary School. Vishwa Vijay Prabhakar received second place in the Fast Fact Round scoring 74 out of 75 total points. Matthew Du received a medal for 10th place in the individual problem solving round and the team of Alex Iliarski, Yagor Balotsin, Goutam Yerri, Vishwa Vijay Prabhakar and Matthew Du received eighth place medals for the team round competition.
The team celebrated with a pizza party on May 7.
