His team is still very inexperienced, but second-year Osseo boys’ tennis coach John Licciardi feels his squad will be more competitive this spring.

The Orioles welcome back returning starters/letterwinners in junior singles Peter Berno and seniors Cody Werner, Connor Dahlberg and Thor Thao. Osseo will have a solid No. 1 singles in Berno, who is entering his fourth season as the varsity top singles.

“Pete has been all conference for three, four years running and has been our No. 1 single for more than that,” Licciardi said. “He is an All-Metro or All-State caliber player.”

The Orioles have two newcomers in junior Ben Ameyaw (doubles/singles) and sophomore Mitchell Brewer (doubles).

With a small roster and limited experience, the Orioles again will be severely tested going against Northwest Suburban Conference rivals. Powerhouses Elk River and Maple Grove are the elites of the league but Licciardi feels his squad can compete with the other conference foes.

“We play loose and are hard-working,” Licciardi said. “Last year we won our first section match for the first time in many years. We look to be a contender outside of Maple Grove and Elk River.”

Osseo hosted Centennial Wednesday, April 16, and entertains Park Center Thursday, April 17.
