STMA wrestlers dominate youth tourney

Winning STMA team members include Chase Mills, Eli Schultz, Ian Schultz, Mason Mills, Parker Janssen, Tyler Zenga, Jimmy Heil, Hunter Knutson, Jonathan Mlsna, Jaeger Evans, Isaiah Mlsna, Bennett Pouliot, Carl Leuer, Hayden LeMonds, Luke Logan, Owen Vike, Wyatt Lidberg, Sean Kennedy, Jackson Kephart, Owen Barthel and Toby Dehn.

Teams from all over the metro area descended on St. Michael this past Sunday for the NYWA Region Qualifier for youth wrestling. Teams made up of kids from grades Kindergarten through 6th grade were in attendance.

This event allows the top 6 placing teams to advance onto the state tournament in Rochester, on the weekend of April 4 to 6.

Sunday’s competition was outstanding. There were many close matches on the day. Tracking the top 6 placing teams in reverse order the results were as follows:

Taking 6th place: Hutchinson. 5th seeded Hutchinson lost their first round match 32-34 in a very close battle with Big Lake. They then beat Becker in the consolation bracket by an equally close score of 37-35 to advance into the 5th/6th place match. In their last match of the day, they lost another very close dual, 32-33 to Delano.

Taking 5th place: Delano. 3rd seeded Delano also lost their first match of the day by a score of 34-36 to a tough ANML squad. Delano next faced Elk River and beat them by a final of 46-22. In the 5th/6th place match, they battled Hutchinson in a great dual, winning in the end by a 33-32 score.

Taking 4th place: ANML. 6th seeded ANML upset Delano in their first match of the day by the score of 36-34. After advancing to the semi-finals, they met up with Waconia and suffered a close 32-39 point loss. In their final match of the day, they faced Big Lake and were defeated by a score of 45-27.

Taking 3rd place: Big Lake. 4th seeded Big Lake faced off against Hutchinson in their first match of the day. They beat Hutchinson by a score of 34-32 to advance into the semi-finals. In their second round match, they squared up against STMA, who defeated them by a score of 48-18. In the 3rd/4th place match they faced ANML and won by a final of 45-27.

Taking 2nd place: Waconia. 2nd seeded Waconia met Elk River in their first match of the day. They defeated them by a final of 41-27. In their second match of the day, they faced off against ANML and defeated them in a very good dual by a score of 39-32, which advanced them to the finals. In the finals, Waconia matched up against STMA and was defeated by a score of 54-12.

Taking 1st place: STMA. 1st seeded STMA faced off against Becker in their first match of the day. They defeated Becker by a final score of 65-15. In the second round of matches, they met up with Big Lake. While both clubs were strong throughout the lineup, STMA defeated Big Lake by a final of 48-18, which advanced them to the championship. In the championship match, STMA faced off against Waconia in a rematch from the BRAWL earlier this year. Once again, STMA came out on top, finishing their day with a dominating 54-12 victory.

These top 6 teams will be advancing to participate in the state youth team wrestling tournament in early April. They tournament will include the top 32 youth teams in the state. Other local teams participating in the event, but not placing, included Becker, Elk River, Buffalo and Watertown-Mayer.
