Prom shop opens in the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes
As the snow begins to melt, many high schoolers begin to think of the end of the school year and prom — that right of passage where the girls wear beautiful dresses and the boys dress in tux formal wear.
Maple Grove now offers a place for those girls looking for the perfect prom dress. Glitz! Gowns has opened a 4,000-square-foot store in the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes.
This is the second Glitz! store in the Twin Cities. There is another location at the Mall of America, which is considered a prom superstore.
“What’s really unique about GLITZ!, is that we have over 2,500 gowns available between our two stores,” said owner MaryAnne London. “Most store owners do not want to make that big a commitment to prom, so it’s become a great niche for our family business.”
Dresses in the store aren’t just for prom. London said they can be worn for homecomings, teen pageants and quinceaneras.
Both locations carry gowns from award-winning specialty designers, including Sherri Hill, Mori Lee, MacDouggal, LaFemme, Tony Bowls, and Jovani. London said only boutique designers are sold in the store, not department store dresses.
London added, “The moms are always asking me to bring a store closer to them. So we have taken the leap.”
She was also influenced to open the new store by daughter-in-law Amber Marquardt Gears who grew up in Annandale. “She knows the area and was convinced that if we build it, they will come,” she said.
London said she was happy with the space available in Maple Grove.
“We have already hired some local employees and are looking forward to adding many more,” she said. “We are a very high service store and often have as many as 20 assistants on the floor during season.”
With an interesting background in unusual store concepts, London opened Chapel of Love, the first wedding chapel in an enclosed mall, at Mall of America in 1994. In 2004, GLITZ! was born.
The Maple Grove location offers layaway for full-price gowns over $149. Gowns range in sizes from 00 to 22.
