Osseo seniors Ryan Swenson and Badhasa Wako will join junior Carson Brolsma at the state wrestling tournament Feb. 27 to March 1 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Orioles had a more than respectable finish as a team at Saturday’s Section 5AAA tournament hosted by Champlin Park, earning individual medals at 13 of 14 weight classes.
“We feel great about our three qualifiers and the entire team effort at sections,” commented Osseo fifth-year head coach Alan Wiley. “I believe Osseo will be well represented in St. Paul next week.”
Brolsma won his second straight section title, taking top honors at 145, with falls over Irondale in 29 seconds and Mounds View, 10 seconds into the second period, en route to the finals where he defeated his Rogers opponent by an 18-3 technical fall. Brolsma, a four-time state qualifier, enters the big show as a returning state medalist and currently ranked second with a 40-1 season record. He is one of the top contenders for the state title.
“I think there are three guys at 145 AAA with a legitimate shot at winning state this year,” Wiley said. “Mark Voss from St. Michael-Albertville (39-2), Brock Morgan from Apple Valley (37-4) and Carson. There is no clear-cut favorite out of those three, it will be whoever wrestles the best that day.”
Swenson will make his first trip to state with a silver-medal winning effort at 132 pounds. Swenson advanced with a quarterfinal technical fall (20-5) over Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony, followed by a (12-6) semifinal decision over the eventual third place winner from Centennial, before falling short to his Maple Grove opponent by a decision in the finals.
Wako will make his first ever state tournament appearance after winning the 152 pound title. Wako opened with a fall over Irondale at 3:54 and a 5-3 decision over Rogers before winning by injury default over his title round opponent from Maple Grove.
