The remarkable run continued for the Rockford jazz funk dance team in its first season of competition when capturing the Section 2A title Saturday at Bloomington Kennedy.
The result is the Rockets advancing as one of 12 teams to the state tournament Friday, Feb. 14 at the Target Center. Rockford competes second in the session that starts at 11:30 a.m.
“The team performed very well,” said coach Heather Holasek. “We received the highest score from six of the seven judges. “We competed against all of our section teams throughout the season. Therefore, the win wasn’t a complete shock. However, the team is extremely grateful to be advancing to the state tournament in our first year of competing.”
Holasek said according to scores posted in January, Rockford could most likely end up placing sixth or seventh at state.
“If we have our best performance ever we may advance to the finals with the top six,” adds the coach. “However, since my team is so young, I am not sure what to expect. I simply hope my team performs the best it can. If we don’t advance to the finals, then it will be our team goal next year.”
Rockford has a small team of eight, the low limit allowed. The team includes Sadie Skeie, Alyssa Nelson, Sam Vraspir, Annika Simpson, Trystin Gruber, Danielle Hagen-Johnson, Lindsey Condon and Chloe Beck.
The top ranked Jazz dance teams in Class A are in alphabetical order Aitkin, Duluth Marshall, Frazee, Yellow Medicine East and Zumbrota.
