Dist. 877 board hears of new high school courses, changes

The Buffalo School Board reviewed with staff some changes to classes at the high school beginning this fall.

Some new classes have been added, modified or removed from the line-up. The board also approved the 2014-15 school year calendar.



BHS administration will determine if the new courses have sufficient student registration and adequate resources to off the courses for next year within the school’s budget.

New courses include: Publications Writing Capstone, STEM Game It Programming, STEEP (Student Transition to Educational & Employment Portfolio), College Level Accounting, Basic Computer Applications, and Senior Strategies (Family and Consumer Science — FACS).

Course Modifications include: English 10 (American History Emphasis), Animation: Hybrid, College & Career Prep, Child Development & Parenting, Classical Music Listening, Calculus 2 and Algebra 2.

Course deletions include: Web 3 Applications, Accounting 3, Personal & Family Issues 1, Personal & Family Issues 2, Fashion Design, and Creating Interior Spaces.

In related high school curriculum matters, the board heard from staff regarding the Responsible Use Curriculum.

District Policy 524 Internet Responsible Use states: “The school district will educate students about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms and cyber bullying awareness and response.”

BHS teachers will now teach responsible use curriculum during: Bison Time, American Experience, English 9, English 10 and Health 10.

In October of 2012 the board approved Responsible Use Curriculum for grades K-8.



In other matters, the board approved the 2014-15 school year calendar.

The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 1, and the last day is Thursday, June 4.

There is no school Thursday and Friday, Oct. 16 and 17 (fall break); no school Monday, Nov. 3 (teacher workshop); Thanksgiving Break Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 26 through 28; Winter Break Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Friday, Jan. 2.

There is no school Monday, Jan. 19 (MLK Jr. Day), no school Monday, Feb. 16 (President’s Day); Spring Break Monday through Friday, March 30 through April 3; and no school Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day).

Commencement is Friday, June 5.

In other action, the board:

APPROVED organization of the school board. School Board Reorganization. The only changes happened in the positions of Clerk and Acting Clerk/Treasurer. Chairperson is Sue Lee; Vice Chairperson is Melissa Brings; Clerk is Patti Pokorney; Treasurer is Laurie Raymond; and Acting Clerk/Treasurer is Dean Perry. The other school board members include director Ken Ogden and director Jeff Trout.
