JAN. 23 — The I-94 West Chamber of Commerce is hosting Vine & Stein Wine & Craft Beer Tasting Event Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Rush Creek Golf Club, Maple Grove. A Special Education Seminar is at 5 p.m. The event features special education seminar with a certified sommelier; Gibraltar – a jazz quartet; passed hors d’ oeuvres; carving station; and samples of the finest wines and craft beers selected by knowledgeable experts. JAN. 26 — Albertville Lions will be hosting its annual Pancake Breakfast Sunday, Jan. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon the St. Albert’s Parish Center for pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and beverages.

DeSousa ‘Cancer Sucks’ benefit

JAN. 26 — Gilson DeSousa, a Physician’s Assistant, working alongside Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Dana Harms at Allina Buffalo Hospital and Clinic, is waging a war against cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that has spread to his liver, he has a battle to win and his co-workers, patients, family and friends are joining together in the fight. Gilson has devoted his life to helping others. As a Physician’s Assistant, he cares for patients each and every day and now he needs our help. Cancer takes its toll in many ways and one of those ways is financial. Every treatment is a financial burden for Gilson. Join in Sunday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at River City Extreme in Monticello to support Gilson and his family. There will be a Taco Bar, Wine Pull, Silent Auction and other fundraising activities. JAN. 27 — A Curbside Chat discussion with the community on the changing economy and responding to difficult times is Monday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Corcoran Civic Center, 8200 County Rd. 116. Strong Towns, a non-profit organization, will host. The presentation has five parts: 1. Background on the current financial crisis. 2. The triggers that are forcing changes in the way we inhabit the landscape. 3. The “dead ideas” we need to overcome to renew prosperity in our towns and neighborhoods. 4. What the coming new economy is likely to look like. 5. What local leaders can do to position their communities for success in the new era. Anyone interested in the future of their community is invited to attend the Curbside Chat. The event is open and free to the public. Strong Towns is a Minnesota-based non-profit organization. Lions ice fishing contest

FEB. 1 — Mark calendars and plan to come wet some lines at the 16th annual St. Michael Lions Club ice fishing contest. This family friendly contest takes place on Beebe Lake just out from the public access Saturday, Feb. 1, from noon to 3 p.m. and will be loaded with prizes again this year. Besides the multitude of door prizes for both adults and children, there will be three cash prizes awarded in each fish category: bass, northern, crappie and sunfish. 1st prize is $100, 2nd prize is $75 and 3rd prize is $50, so 12 chances to win cash. Judged by the weight of any one fish in each class. All prizes will be awarded. There will also be a separate winter sport raffle that offers a chance to win a Vexilar FL-20 fish finder, a portable fish house and many gift certificates. Cost for a ticket to fish is $5 for age 16 and under, and $10 for age 17 and older. Each ticket will get you one hole and will enter you into the door prize drawing. The Winter Sports Raffle tickets separate from the fishing prizes, are $5 each. Both fishing and raffle tickets can be pre-bought at St. Michael Hardware Hank or Dehmer’s Meats in St. Michael. The KRWC Road Show will be on hand to play music and games. Lunch and concessions will be available on the ice, or you may bring your own food and beverages.
