The Osseo wrestling team split a pair of conference meets last week, dropping a Wednesday night dual to Elk River 44-24 and then winning 64-12 Friday at Park Center.
”Our lightweights are really doing a nice job of setting the tone for these dual meets and going after the team points,” said fifth-year Oriole head coach Alan Wiley. “We’ve had a different lineup for every meet this season, with guys building their confidence and getting great varsity experience that will help the team win the close duals as we get closer to section time.”
The Black and Orange have posted a 3-5 conference dual meet record, with a 5-7 overall mark.
In the Elk River dual freshmen Nicholas Carline and Mitchell Lewison started the Orioles off strong, with a major decision and a fall at 106 and 113 but the Elks rallied to take the next five matches before senior Azra Jones put six more up for Osseo with a default win at 152.
Junior Carson Brolsma followed with a technical fall at 160 for his 25th win of the season but Elk River claimed the next four weights before junior heavyweight Travis Mollen closed out on a high note, with a 3-2 overtime win.
Against Park Center the Orioles ran off victories at the first six weights before the Pirates were able to put their first points up at 145. Osseo won six of the final seven matches to win big.
The feature match of the night arguably took place at 132 pounds where Osseo senior tri-captain Ryan Swenson met one of PC’s top wrestlers, in junior Melvin Wilson. In a very physical and competitive match, Swenson was able to score a late take-down to earn a 5-4 victory.
Other top performances against the Pirates were by eighth graders Adam Lanners (120) and Aacoda Aitkin (126) both winning by major decisions. Junior Matt Lillis also had an impressive outing with a second period tech-fall at 182. Pins were by junior Isahak Osman at 138, Jones at 152, Brolsma at 160, sophomore Julio Cebellos at 220 and Mollen at 275.
Orioles mat notes: Lewison recorded his 50th varsity career win against Elk River. Brolsma leads the squad with a 26-1 record, including 14 falls and 130 team points.
The Orioles next travel to Totino-Grace for a quad with Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Cretin Derham Hall and the second-rated (2A) TG Eagles Thursday Jan. 16 starting at 5 p.m. Osseo then enters the Elk River tournament Saturday, Jan. 18.
