Titles, both individual and team, seem to be the rule, lately, for the St. Michael-Albertville cross country teams. Competing in the STMA Invitational on Tuesday October 1st, then in the Swain Invitational in
Duluth on Saturday October 5th, the Knights had their busiest week of the season with 2 meets in one week. The Knight varsity boys came away with the team title in the 8-team STMA Invitational and in 4 individual varsity races contested in the 2 meets, the Knights were four for four in individual race titles. Junior Chase Cayo came away with 2 individual titles capturing medalist honors in both the STMA Invitational and the Swain Invitational.
Cayo won in a personal best time of 16:05 at STMA ,then bested his personal record again at Swain winning in a time of 15:54 for the 5K, despite almost hurricane type conditions at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth. Cayo’s time of 15:54 elevated him to number two on the STMA All-time fastest 5K list. Junior Rachel King posted a course record and school record time of 14:24 in winning the individual 4K title at the STMA Invite, with teammate Lizzy Heil placing 2nd in a personal-best time of 14:30. 4 days later, Lizzy Heil won the individual 4K title at the Swain Invitational in Duluth in a time of 15:17. Teammate Rachel King medaled by placing 10th, individually.
As mentioned, the Knight boys captured the team title at STMA with a point total of 47, followed by Apple Valley-69, Rogers-72, Maple Grove-105, Minnehaha Academy-115, Robbinsdale Cooper-166, Anoka-193, and Buffalo-211. Number two runner for the Knights, behind Cayo, was Dominic Shovelain (17:13-8th), then Jake Monseth (9th-17:21), Lukas Layton (14th-17:38), Jackson Connelly (15th-17:41), Christian Eiynck (20th-17:51), and Keith Jorgenson (21st-17:53). The STMA Junior Varsity boys were 2nd to Apple Valley, led by Caleb Holt (4th-18:50).
The STMA varsity girls were 3rd place as a team at STMA. The Anoka girls won the team title with 52 points, followed by Maple Grove-59, STMA-75, Minnehaha Academy-97, Apple Valley-118, Rogers-120, and Robbinsdale Cooper-172. Following the 1-2 finishes of King and Heil, Belle Nyhus (10th-16:14) was the 3rd runner for STMA, followed by Abbie Herbst (24th-16:48), McKenna Rogers (41st-17:26), Jaymie Hansen (49th-17:51), and Karson Sorby (53rd-18:04). The STMA Junior Varsity Girls were also 3rd , as a team, led by Mary Schmitz (18th-18:38).
At the Swain Invitational in Duluth the Knight varsity boys placed 3rd, as a team, in the field of 28 teams, behind Totino Grace and Southwest Minneapolis. Following Cayo, the Knights placed as follows: Jake Monseth (30th-17:28), Lukas Layton (31st-17:29), Dominic Shovelain (37th-17:32),
Keith Jorgenson (44th-17:39), Jackson Connelly (46th-17:42), and Christian Eiynck (85th-18:20).
The Junior Varsity boys were 2nd as a team, led by Luke Pelant (5th-18:01).
The Knight varsity girls at Swain, were almost equally as impressive as the boys, placing 4th , as a team, among 25 teams. As mentioned, Lizzy Heil was 1st in a time of 15:17, followed by Rachel King (10th -15:54), then Belle Nyhus (32nd-16:56), Abbie Herbst (64th-17:42), McKenna Rogers (65th-17:45), Jaymie Hansen (129th-19:13), and Karson Sorby (133rd-19:17). The STMA Junior Varsity girls placed 6th, as a team, and were paced by Erin Schindler (23rd-18:59).
Next competition for the STMA harriers is Tuesday October 15th at the Mississippi-8 Conference Meet, which now has 10 teams. The meet will be held at “The Ponds” golf course, on the east edge of the town of St. Francis. The JV boys run at 4:25 PM, JV girls at 4:50 PM, varsity boys at 5:20 PM, and varsity girls at 5:45 PM.
