The Orioles girls’ tennis team is more experienced but it still finds that wins are hard to come by this season.

“Our team is more experienced than it has been in the past few years, but we are still playing catch up,” Osseo coach Eric Ruska said. “We are playing better than we have in many years, but as a team we still only have one win.”

The Orioles have returners at the top two singles in Alison Rusche and Sidney Polich, a new varsity player at No. 3 singles in ninth grader Maddy Marasch and a No. 4 singles in sophomore Dana Bakke. Rusche has four singles wins and a doubles win.

Ruska is looking for growth in his doubles teams since the Orioles return the most varsity roster players from last year on that side of the group. Those returning players are senior Austin Saffe, juniors Hannah Dolby, Erin Lewison, Maddy Johnson and Josie Simon, and sophomore Ari Jones. Newer players in the double group: are senior Brenna Hughes, juniors Lizzy Stanke and Allison Duffy and sophomore Meghan Corniea.

Osseo’s lone win was a 4-3 triumph over Park Center Sept. 3. Rusche and Marasch won at singles and the No. 2 doubles of Saffe and Lewison, and third doubles of Simon and Hughes provided the winning performances.
