Anyone who’s ever seen Ernest Thompson’s play, On Golden Pond, knows the success of the show relies heavily on the casting of its two lead actors. The 1981 film starring Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn made famous its two lead characters, an elderly couple facing their twilight years, Norman and Ethel Thayer, who return one last time to their summer home on Golden Pond.
Yellow Tree Theatre, 320 Fifth Ave. S.E., has gotten Twin Cities’ theater veterans and real husband-and-wife team, Jon Cranney and Katherine Ferrand, to star in their production of On Golden Pond this fall. Cranney has worked as a director, performer and producer at just about every theater in the Twin Cities including The Guthrie, the Children’s Theatre Company, Chanhassen, Mixed Blood, Park Square and Mu Performing Arts, to name a few. And with 15 years as a company member at the Guthrie and a 14-year stint as the Artistic Director of the Children’s Theatre Company, it’s safe to say Cranney’s career longevity and remarkable contribution to the Twin Cities theater scene is unparalleled.
A theatre veteran herself, Ferrand was a Guthrie regular for seven seasons, appeared opposite Sissy Spacek and Charlize Theron in North Country and has appeared on Broadway. This will be the second time the powerhouse theater couple will work together on the Yellow Tree stage. Cranney recently directed Ferrand in their acclaimed 2011 production of “The Glass Menagerie.”
Jason and Jessica Peterson, the husband-and-wife team who run Yellow Tree, are thrilled to have a couple like the Cranneys who have decades of experience — both professionally and in marriage — in their company. “The wisdom and experience that Jon and Katherine bring with them is a huge asset not only to Yellow Tree, but also to Jason and I personally,” said Jessica. “Being married in this business isn’t always a cake walk and they have become true mentors for us. Their chemistry both on and off the stage is truly an inspiration.”
