Maple Grove soccer player selected to elite youth team to play in Spain

Luke Haakenson of Maple Grove has been selected to the Adidas International soccer team and is playing in Madrid Spain this week.

Haakenson was born in Maple Grove in 1997 but commutes 1,000 miles a week back and forth to Shattuck to play soccer for the United States Developmental Academy. This will be his third year attending school at Shattuck St. Mary’s in Faribault.

Playing professional soccer is Haakenson’s dream and he has been working hard toward that goal since a very young age. At age 11 he was one of 100 boys in the United States pulled into the U14 National Pool to be identified for further development for National Team potential. He was also the only 13 year old from the U.S. invited to the West Ham International Elite Camp in August 2011 in London, England.

Haakenson currently plays on the U16 team for the Academy at Shattuck. His first year at Shattuck he was an eighth grader and one of the few 97s in the US playing in the developmental academy.

Haakenson plays with the Adidas team in Madrid from Aug. 17 to 25. It is an invitation only trip open to elite players from around the world.  They submit their player resume a year in advance and are notified if they are selected as part of the team who is invited to train an play in the Academy.
