Champlin Library to host kids August events

Kids and teens can take part in upcoming August events at the Champlin Library. The Champlin Library, 12154 Ensign Ave. N., will host the following events:

“DIY Steam Punk,” Thursday, Aug. 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Register for those entering grades eight to 12. Use things like telephones, trophies, old toys, watches, printers and keyboard parts to create ships, machines, jewelry or inventions in an alternate universe. Drills, hot glue and wire will fuel a journey. Materials provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Hennepin County Library and MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency). Presented in collaboration with Leonardo’s Basement.

“Camp Half-Blood,” Monday, Aug. 5, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Register for those entering grades three to six. Does someone have what it takes to be a hero like Percy Jackson of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians?” Test wits and knowledge of Greek mythology at Camp Half-Blood. Sponsored by Friends of the Champlin Library.

“Guys Read Kids Book Club” — Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Register for guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the customer service desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Champlin Library. What We’re Reading: Aug. 6 is “The Way of the Warrior” (Young Samurai, book 1), by Chris Bradford.

“Art Out of the Box: Handmade Portraits,” Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register for those entering grades two to five. Museum-trained teens will take you on a hands-on exploration of portraits from the museum. Turn an idea of self-image on its head with a playful approach to a timeless art form. Leave with a sketchbook to keep drawing whenever inspiration strikes. Presented in partnership with Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Funded by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.

“Girls Only Teen Book Club,” Monday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register for girls entering grades six to 12. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the customer service desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Champlin Library. What We’re Reading: Aug. 12 is “Tokyo Heist,” by Diana Renn.

“AniManga Matsuri,” Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — For teens. Celebrate summer – anime style. Join the Champlin Anime Club for a festival of anime, cosplay, games and more. Sponsored by Friends of the Champlin Library and by the Anime Twin Cities.
