Recently the Osseo-Maple Grove VFW Post 11543 awarded the residents from RidgePointe Apartments with a plaque thanking them for “their continuous help and support.”
RidgePoint resident and lifetime member of the VFW Post Harlan Riedesel came up with an idea of saving, collecting and sending manufacturers coupons to service families overseas. The local VFW first started cutting the coupons. Since then, residents at RidgePoint have helped with the effort by cutting numerous coupons from Smart Source and Red Plum that come in the Sunday paper.
The merchants of these coupons have also extended the expiration dates by six months for these families so the coupons can still be used.
Over the past three years, the program has collected almost $75,000 worth of coupons. RidgePointe has been one of the largest contributors. This program is now a national project for the VFW in which nearly $50 million worth of coupons have been given to service families.
Other programs the Osseo-Maple Grove VFW works with is the Voices of Democracy and Patriot Pen scholarship programs for area students. Applications will available in September at Osseo and Maple Grove junior and senior high school for interested students. Applications for the Voices of Democracy are for students in grades nine to 12. Students will write and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. Patriot Pen applications are for students in sixth to eighth grade. This program allows students to write essays expressing their views on democracy. The deadline for applications for each program is Nov. 1.
The Osseo-Maple Grove VFW Post 11543 is looking for new members to join. Anyone interested can contact Post Commander Glenn Carlton at 612-743-5978.
