Elk River boys lacrosse opened with an 11-6 win over the new Rogers team making its debut last Friday in Elk River.
Brad Yankowiak, Zach Patraw and Matt Keller each had two goals for the Elks and Jake Brentesen was in goal.
Rogers has previously been part of the Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman program but broke away this year.
Coach Luke Bame had these reflections on the Royals’ program’s debut:
“The guys started out very timid and it took a bit for them to find their comfort level versus a much older and bigger Elk River team. We have roughly 65 to 75 percent underclassman starters with the majority coming in as freshman, so our outlook is bright. I would call our first game encouraging, as was their moments of great lacrosse played.”
Tristan Witthuhn, a sophomore, had the distinction of scoring the first goal for Rogers lacrosse. He wound up with three for the game. Nick Fossum and Alex Pryzbilla had one each. Nick Miller, a junior, was goalie, his first year at the position.
Jason Roberge at left attack made several successful dodges and took some good shots. Bame also credited Nick Pryzbilla at defensive middle and freshman Torey Goetz at LSM with spirited performances.
The Elks will play at Blaine on Monday. Rogers will host Buffalo on Tuesday.
