North Shore gymnasts capture boys region honors

Eighteen gymnasts from the area’s North Shore Gymnastics Association’s boys team competed at the 2013 regional championships at the University of Minnesota April 12-14.

Qualifying boys from six states including Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota participated in the meet hosted by NSGA.

Three NSGA gymnasts came away with first place all-around competition medals and there were numerous individual first place finishes.

NSGA’s Level 10 gymnast Andrew Klump (18) competed exclusively on pommel horse and won first place. As a result of his finish, Klump qualified to compete at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Portland, Oregon in early May.

NSGA’s Level 9 team placed fifth. Shane Wiskus (14) was all-around champion. He also took home regional championship medals on pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar. He also finished third on rings and fourth on floor. Wiskus qualified to compete at the Junior Olympics.

Levi Gustafson (15) won regional championship medals on floor, rings and all-around with a score of 68.30. Gustafson also finished second on pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

Jacob Cleveland, (13) contributed to the team’s overall score.

The NSGA Level 8 team finished fifth. Josh Fix (14) was all-around regional champion, placing first on parallel bars, second on rings, third on pommel horse and vault and fourth on high bar.

Carter Pickens (14) placed fourth on pommel horse and parallel bars and fifth on rings, high bar and all-around. Daryn Strub (12) took first place on vault and second place on floor. He qualified for the Junior Olympic national meet in Oregon.

The Level 6 team took home the fourth place. Sam Senneka (12) earned third place on pommel horse and was fourth on vault, parallel bars and all-around. Tristan Fruth (13) finished fifth all-around.

Charlie Kramer (11), finished fourth on floor.  Ryan Klump (9) finished second on rings.  Max Bortnem (12) and Kyle Elliott (10) contributed to the Level 6 team’s overall results.

Level 5 was led by Caleb Hamby (12), finished third on rings and high bar and fourth on pommel horse. Kastle Kalamaha (12) earned the fifth place medal on rings.   Cole Smith (10), Jack Yerxa (10) and Halsten Larson (9) contributed to the team’s overall score.
