Osseo High School will be represented by five individuals at the 2013 Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament this weekend in St. Paul. This is the most Osseo grapplers to qualify for the big show since the program sent five in 2008 and only the second time since the turn of the century to have as many as five.
The Orioles also earned individual section medals at 12 of 14 weight classes for an impressive overall team finish to go with their silver-medalist finish the previous week at team sections.
“It’s been a rewarding season and a great accomplishment to have five qualifiers and seven more on the podium,” said fourth-year Osseo coach Alan Wiley. “The success of our team is shared by all of our wrestlers who have worked hard in the room this season.”
Osseo seniors Tony Gamache and AJ Dehn, along with underclassmen Andrew Lanners, Ferhan Abdisa and Carson Brolsma will compete in the three-day showcase featuring the top high school wrestling talent in Minnesota.
Brolsma, a sophomore, left no doubt on his way to his first section title and third straight state appearance, with a dominant performance featuring two pins and a technical fall to capture the 132 pound championship. Brolsma pinned his quarter-final opponent from Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony in 27 seconds, followed by a semi-final pin over Champlin Park at 1:27 and a technical fall over Mounds View standout Jack O’Brien at 5:37 in the title round.
Tri-captain Gamache overwhelmed the 145 pound class with three straight falls for his first section title and second consecutive state birth. Gamache advanced with first period pins over Park Center in 46 seconds and Centennial at 1:15, before completing the hat-trick with a title round pin at 2:27 over Roger’s outstanding senior Kyler Swanson.
Abdisa, a sophomore, earned his first trip to state with a silver medal winning effort at 126. Abdisa advanced with a 12-7 decision over Mounds View before upsetting second-seeded Mike Matheson of Centennial in a (7-6) nail-bitter, before falling to Irondale’s state-rated senior Dustin Weinman in the title match.
Lanners, a junior, wrestled his way to a second place finish at 160 and his first trip to the Xcel. Lanners opened with a (5-2) decision over Rogers before knocking off Centennial’s #2 seeded Tom Handley (6-3) to advance to the title match where he came up short in a close decision against Champlin Park senior ace Cory Berry.
Tri-captain Dehn earned his first state appearance with a silver-medal winning effort at heavyweight, advancing to the title round with consecutive falls over opponents from Rogers and Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony before suffering his only loss of the day when Irondale’s state-rated Eriq Smith turned the tables after AJ took an early lead scoring the opening takedown.
Eighth grader Mitchell Lewison (third at 106), seventh grader Adam Lanners (fifth at 113), junior Ryan Swenson (fourth at 138), senior Trevor Schauls (sixth at 152), senior Badhassa Wako (fifth at 170), freshman Julio Ceballos (fourth at 182) and senior tri-captain Michael Lillis (fifth at 220).
Oriole mat notes: Six Osseo wrestlers have achieved 20 plus varsity wins through sections, including Brolsma (32), Gamache (29), Swenson (23), Lanners (22), Lewison (22) and Dehn (21). Gamache and Dehn have been the pace setters this season in the falls category, both reaching the 20 pins milestone, Gamache with 23 and Dehn 20. Team point leaders: Gamache (136) and Brolsma (122).
