The Osseo Nordic Ski team capped their fine season with a good showing at the Minnesota State Nordic Ski meet at difficult trails at Giants Ridge Thursday, Feb. 14.
Senior Kaley Shagen skied in her fifth straight State meet coming in 46th in pursuit, with a fine 32nd in her classic race. Sophomore Sarah Bezdicek earned all state honors finishing 19th in the pursuit.
“Kaley has been a great mentor for Sarah, showing her how to train to compete at the top levels of skiing. Her experience will be hard to replace,” said Osseo coach Brad Rosch.
Junior Tanner Wetzel was Osseo’s top boy finisher taking 46th passing 25 skiers in the classic race, while posting the 27th best classic time. Senior Austin Schumer took 60th in the pursuit. Schumer would have placed higher, but had a spectacular fall in the classic race costing him several places. Senior Kevin Curwick had two solid races placing 72nd.
“The state meet is so tightly packed that a few seconds is many places,” Rosch said. “We couldn’t be more proud of the guys. They all skied well. There was only a 1:12 difference between Tanner, Austin and Kevin.”
The day before the state meet Osseo participated in the Charlie Banks Relays. The girls team of Sarah Todey (classic- 25th) Jenna Thompson (classic- 20th), Kaitlyn Anderson (skate- 17th) and Marissa Wright (skate- ninth) placed ninth of 37 teams. The boys relay placed eighth of 33 teams. Skiing the boys relay were: Cody Werner (classic- 37th) Mark Gooley (classic-25th), Mitchell Dehmer (skate-9th) Jason Schulte (skate- 12th).
