It’s been a long time since the St. Michael-Albertville boys’ swim/dive team has lost a dual meet – two years to be exact.
The streak of back-to-back undefeated seasons appeared in jeopardy when their final dual meet on Feb. 5 had No. 10 rated Wayzata on its schedule.
With a much tougher schedule this season than the 8-0 record posted a year ago, STMA had to defeat the high powered Trojans to keep its undefeated streak alive. In thrilling fashion, the Knights and Trojans meet was decided in the final event and it was the Knights coming out on top 95-91.
“We’ve had a lot of big meets over the past few years, but this one sticks out the most,” said STMA head coach Tom Guillou. “This ranks right up there as one of the top wins in the five years of the program.”
Leading 87-85 heading into the final and deciding event, the 400-relay team of senior Sam Konsor, senior Brandon Richardson, sophomore Grant Moser and senior Noah Dalluge squeaked out a first-place time of 3:16.52. It was just seconds faster than the 3:18.25 time posted by the Trojan relay team.
“They were ahead after the first two legs,” Guillou said. “Moser and Dalluge had great finishes.”
Other first-place times: Senior’s Max Rooney, Eli Guillou, Konsor and Dalluge in the 200 medley relay (1:41.18), Moser in the 200 freestyle (1:50.34), Richardson in the 200 individual medley (2:02.87), Dalluge in the 50 freestyle (21.88) and 100 freestyle (49.00) and the 200 relay team of Richardson, Moser, freshman Brandon Cusick and junior Alec Bolme (1:31.98).
The two teams combined to set 10 pool records in 12 events.
The STMA relay teams are all ranked in the top 10 in state. The 400 freestyle is ranked No. 4. Both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay are ranked No. 6 and 8, respectively.
The Knights will be at St. Cloud Tech on Feb 22-23 for the Section 8AA Tournament.
