Crimson Nordic ski team competes in NWSC championship

The  Maple Grove Nordic ski team competed in the Northwest Suburban Conference Nordic at Elm Creek Park Reserve Jan. 31. The team had a good showing with three team members making All Conference.

The Maple Grove girls took seventh in the pursuit race. Placements of the top six Crimson girls were junior Jenny Aarons (19th), senior Elizabeth Kurpiers (36th), senior Juhyun Kwon (37th), junior Celina Berndt (40th) and Leah Jackels (42nd). Aarons earned All Conference for her performance.

The Crimson boys skied to a sixth-place finish in the pursuit race. The top six Crimson boy skiers were junior Sean Heaton (seventh), senior Mario Calabria (11th), junior Greg Brasier (31st), senior Josh Rem (49th),  junior Eric Jackels (54th) and senior Ryan Gram (58). Heaton and Calabria earned All Conference for their performance.

“The team competed hard and we believe that they did the best that they could,” Maple Grove coach Matt Gifford said. “We tell the kids to do the best they can and we are proud of all of our kids for never giving up and working hard.”

The team is training hard for the Section 2 meet at Theodore Wirth Park Thursday, Feb. 7.
