Hockey: Royal boys lose to Forest Lake 4-1

The Rogers Royals scored the first goal but lost to Forest Lake 4-1 in the fifth-place game at the Schwan Cup Bronze Division tournament on Friday, Dec. 28, in Blaine.

Spencer Marchand gave Rogers a 1-0 lead at 4:59 of the second period, assisted by Brandon Spah.

Forest Lake (7-5), outshooting Rogers 38-26, took charge after that. John Suess notched two goals (one empty-netter) and Cody Rogala and Jack Schmidt one each.

Blake Ternus stopped 34 of 37 for Rogers and Jessie Garcia 25 of 26 for the Rangers.

In earlier action, Travis Brown’s third goal of the game gave the Rogers Royals a 5-4 overtime win over St. Paul Academy in the consolation round of the Schwan Cup Bronze Division tournament.

Brown, junior defenseman, got the hat trick and game-winner 6:43 into the extra session, assisted by Matt Hellickson.

Jacob Walker and Nate Weber had the other goals, Alex Lorman made two assists, and Blake Termus stopped 23 of 27 shots for the Royals (3-6-1), who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Drew Blackman, Justin Jallen, Jared Mickelson and Cameron Clausey scored for SPA (6-4).

The Royals lost their first-round game to Cretin-Derham Hall 3-0 on Wednesday. Brett Huebner had two goals for the Raiders (5-4).

Rogers (3-7-1) will resume conference p lay hosting Cambridge-Isanti on Thursday.
