Seven players scored touchdowns for the Rogers Royals as they breezed 56-6 over winless Duluth Denfeld at homecoming on Friday evening.
The Royals (5-1) had a quick 14-0 lead as Nate Weber and Kent Hoover took turns converting each other’s takeaway into a touchdown. Weber recovered a Denfeld fumble at the Hunter 16 on the third play from scrimmage and Hoover scored from the 16 two plays later. Hoover then intercepted a pass and Weber bolted 16 yards to the end zone five plays later.
With Gunnar Bloom (38 yards), Nate Roehl (6 yards), Jake Owens (6 yards), and Weber again (8 yards) adding touchdown runs, the Royals led 42-0 at the half.
Adam Heyer (22 yards) and Steve Hines (one yard) hit pay dirt in the second half and Mitch Grupa was 8-for-8 on conversions.
The Royals rolled up 343 rushing yards with 15 different players getting carries. Roehl had the most, 54 yards in six carries.
Denfeld, which is 0-6 and outscored 269-28, averted a shutout when Ben Halverson ran 73 yards in the fourth quarter.
The Royals remained in a first-place tie with Cambridge-Isanti and Monticello, all 4-1 in the Mississippi 8.
Next week, they play the other Duluth team, East, in Duluth, at 6 p.m.
