The 2012 STMA “Knights” country team will have some experience for the upcoming season as they return 6 runners with quite a bit of varsity experience.

“All-State” cross country performer, senior, Brendan Sage, leads the team. Sage, who begins only his 3rd year of cross country, was the individual champion of the Mississippi-8 Conference, last season and was 25th at the 2011 State Cross Country Meet. Sophomore, Chase Cayo, earned “All Conference” status in 2011, while Derek Johanson(senior) and Jake Monseth(sophomore), were “Honorable-Mention All-Conference” in last year’s Conference Meet. Other letter-winners from a year ago are: Alec Birk and Dominic Shovelain. According to Coach Greeno, “Our boys put in a very good summer of work, so they’re off to a good start for setting themselves up for a successful season. Continuing to improve throughout the season, will be the key.”

The boys, like the girls, will participate in the scrimmage Friday Aug. 24, with the “Boys” race at 9:40 a.m., at the St. Michael Rec. Center.

They, too, travel to Milaca Monday Aug. 27, for their first competition of the year. The Varsity Boys race is at 5:10 p.m. and the Boys JV at 5:30 p.m., at Milaca. According to Greeno, there are too many names to mention and too many new faces with unknown ability to predict who has a shot at varsity.

The Knights have 54 boys (grades 9-12) out for cross country. Besides the returning letterwinners, the seniors include: Matt Bernstein, James Bezanson, Mitch Chatterton, Joe Clayton, Mitch Coulson, Logan Franzen, Nick Gullickson, Kyle Highberg, Tad Miller, Alex Rauenhorst, Charlie Shaw, and Nick Washatka. Juniors boys are: Jason Colgrove, Matt Coquyt, Jeremy Goude, Josh Hesser, Truman Kottke, Alex Nagengast, Luke Pelant, and Luke Rysdahl. Sophomore boys include: Gavin Allen, Nick Batchelor, Mason Busch, Michael Campbell, Jake Coulson, Tre Dorenbusch, Christian Eiynck, Dylan Elsness, Evan Gjesvold, Drew Hinkemeyer, Lance Lewison, Ryan Moore, and Justin Pittelkow. And freshmen boys include: Nolan Anderson, Brian Colgrove, Jackson Connelly, Will Dierberger, Jake Gallagher, Nolan Grambusch, Austin Jefferies, Lukas Layton, Cam Lehman, Jack Nadeau, Ryan Nelson, Niki Purohit, Joe Rios, Joe Salonek, and Ron Tanchin.
