STMA’s Greeno named cross country ‘coach of year’

Less than one year after being named a section cross country Coach of the Year, St. Michael-Albertville cross country coach Gregg Greeno was named State Girls AA Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Being named coach of the year is not new to Greeno, who, as the former longtime STMA wrestling coach, was twice named State Wrestling Coach of the Year (1996 and 2004).

“This was a bit of a surprise,” Greeno said. “I didn’t even know that this was even going to happen.”

Greeno’s STMA girls team won the section last year, and it’s the second girls team to go to state in Greeno’s seven years of being the head cross country coach for STMA boys and girls.

“It’s humbling to be recognized like this by my peers and I know as far as the coaching goes, my assistant coach Amy Norby deserves most of the credit for our girls’ success as she worked so much with the girls this past season and obviously did a great job,” Greeno said. “My junior high coach, Paul Jeffery, also does a great job, making it fun, and coaching up the seventh- and eighth-graders in cross country.”
