The Maple Grove American Legion Baseball Team will be one of 14 host sites July 13-15 for The Gopher Classic. Eighty-four teams from the United States and Canada will converge on The Twin Cities to compete in what is considered the best American Legion Tournament in the country.
The Crimson will open play Friday night at 7 p.m. vs. Thunder Bay Ontario. Saturday MG faces Sioux Falls West at 11:30 a.m. and East Ridge of Woodbury at 7 p.m. Sunday pool play concludes with MG playing Minneapolis SW at 4:30 p.m. and Litchfield at 7 p.m. Maple Grove won The 2011 Site Championship for the first time since 2005.
Maple Grove enters the week of July 9 with a 13-2 record. Recent North Hennepin wins over Anoka, Coon Rapids and Spring Lake Park put Post 172 on top of The North Hennepin Standings at 6-0.
The Crimson traveled to Fargo June 29 to July 1 and went 3-2 over the weekend. An 8-1 setback to Omaha West and a 5-2 loss to Tri City Red are the only blemishes on this year’s squad. Wins over Fargo, Detroit Lakes and West Fargo rounded out the weekend.
Roman Collins and Alex Naasz each homered in Fargo while Naasz followed up with his second three-run blast of the season against Spring Lake Park.
