Maple Grove scored two goals in each half to defeat host Osseo 4-0 in a conference girls’ soccer game Aug. 31.

The Orioles played hard against the seventh ranked team in the state but in the end the well-rounded and talented Crimson were too much for the young Osseo team. Austyn Findley and goalie Erica Seitz led the Orioles defensive line which stopped several early Crimson scoring opportunities.

Maple Grove scored the first goal about 10 minutes into the game on free kick confusion. The referee initially signaled for an Osseo free kick causing several Orioles to move up the field. He then changed the call to a Crimson free kick. Crimson captain Meredith Haakenson alertly capitalized by curling the free kick into the far corner before the Orioles could form a defensive wall.

That was a tough break for the Orioles as they could not generate much offense as the Crimson controlled midfield. The Crimson scored their second goal with 20 seconds in the first half when Mia Omar got a breakaway and buried a left-footed shot.

Maple Grove netted second half goals by Abby Schulte and Shelby Handberg.

The Crimson, who are 3-0 and have yet to allow a goal, next visit Irondale Thursday, Sept. 7, and host Spring Lake Park Saturday, Sept. 9.

Osseo, 1-2-1, next visit Park Center Thursday, Sept. 7, and host Elk River Saturday, Sept. 9.
