A Rockford man was injured in a motorcycle versus mini van crash, Wednesday, Aug. 3 in the 7000 block of County Road 11 in Independence.
At 3:40 p.m. the West Hennepin Public Safety Department was dispatched to the scene, police said. Upon arrival WHPS officers found a 59 year old motorcyclist, Mark Walton, of Rockford, lying in the ditch conscious and breathing. The driver of the second vehicle, a 1998 Mazda mini van, was Roman Florey, 70, of Maple Plain. The two vehicle air bags had deployed.
North Memorial Ground Ambulance treated Walton at the scene, according to police. He appeared to have a broken wrist and ankle. He was flown to North Memorial Medical Center by North Memorial Air Care. Florey was treated by North Memorial Ground Ambulance at the scene for minor injuries and released.
Florey stated he was traveling east on County Road 11, according to police. He looked at his neighbor’s residence to see if he was home, saw that he was and signaled his turn into the driveway.
Police said Florey did not see the motorcycle traveling west bound on County Road 11 until it was too late. The motorcycle collided with Florey’s vehicle. Walton was thrown off the motorcycle and over the vehicle. He landed in the ditch.
The motorcycle had extensive front end damage, police said. The mini van had extensive damage to the right front quarter panel in front of the wheel. The right side of the windshield was starred and caved in. Florey was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way.
County Road 11 was closed down for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
WHPS Officers were assisted by Delano Fire Rescue, Medina Police, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and North Memorial Ambulance.
