Independence, Maple Plain team up for fun

The cities of Independence and Maple Plain are cooperating in bringing to the area Maple Plain Days, an end-of-summer celebration featuring activities and events for families and kids of all ages.

Events begin with citywide garage sales in both cities on Thursday, Aug. 13 and Friday, Aug. 14.

On Friday the Maple Plain Historic Museum will host an ice cream social from 3 to 6 p.m. at 5240 Main Street East.

A community picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Maple Plain Fire Department, 1645 Pioneer Ave. Area fire departments will compete in a water ball challenge from 6 to 8 p.m. A movie in the park will go on screen at dusk, around 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, the fourth annual 5K fun run/walk will step off from the Northside Park parking lot at 5050 Independence St. at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Main parking areas on Saturday will be on Independence Street and the Discovery Center. Handicap parking will available at Northside Park.

Saturday events at Northside Park, corner of Budd and Independence Streets, will include a Maple Plain League softball tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a farmers market and craft fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Food vendors will be available all day.

Discovery Center will offer a petting zoo and kids and stroller parades. The Kiddie Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Other Saturday events will be a classic car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., community parade at 11 a.m., blood drive from noon to 5 p.m., Maple Plain Historic Museum Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bingo from 1 to 3 p.m., bean bag tournament at 4 p.m., beer garden opening at 3 p.m., street dance from 1 to 2 p.m. and Boogie Wonderland performing from 8 to 11:30 p.m..
