Rockford schools consider joining Wright County Conference

The Rockford School Board met to discuss a proposal introduced by the activities department regarding the possibility of joining the Wright County Conference and to review an update of the bonding projects.

The Rockford School Board has expressed interest in joining the Wright County athletic conference.

The Wright County Conference is broken up into two districts; the East and the West. The East Division includes larger schools such as Delano, Hutchinson, Holy Family, Orono, Waconia and New Prague. The West Division is made up of Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Litchfield, New London-Spicer, Mound, Westonka and Watertown Mayer. Rockford would join the smaller schools to the West.

Rockford activities are smaller in comparison to the other schools that would be included in the West District. Staff anticipates the number of students involved in activities will grow within the next few years. It was recommended that integration into the conference begin in the 2015-16 year with boys and girls soccer, gymnastics, dance, speech and academic challenges. In the 2016-17 year cross country, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, track, boys and girls golf will be integrated into the Wright County Conference.

By integrating in activities over a period of three years, coaches are able to prepare for a season of tougher competition and altogether allow participants to be more competitive among the conference. Furthermore, this would allow staff to hire additional quality educators to commit and offer experience in the activities setting.

In other news, construction is underway at the high school, middle school and elementary schools.

At the high school, new rooftops are in and the auditorium corridor and rooms have ceilings in place. In the commons addition, concrete floors are being poured, the interior glass is set and the kitchen/concessions tile is near completion. The new and relocated lockers in the commons west end are in place with the lockers and locker room near completion and the new sound and lighting packages are being installed in the auditorium.

At the middle school, the classroom wing is near completion and all of the rooftop and air handling units are set. The roofing is complete and the mechanical rooms will be tested and balanced before students return in September.

At the elementary school, the courtyard curtain wall replacement has been completed and the exterior stoops have been removed and re-poured. The school has been pressure washed to remove algae growth, dirt and shallow nest debris and the landscaping is complete. The upper campus parking lot, tennis courts and practice field construction is well underway and the baseball stadium and promenade grading and demolition is well underway with a new path being installed.

Though the projects are nearing completion, several other improvements will be made to each building in the coming weeks. The final projects mainly include the efficiency and functionality of the building’s heating systems, HVAC systems and putting the finishing touches on some exterior features including a new staircase, baseball bleachers, press box and dougout on the baseball fields.
