STMA girls increase record to 6-3 in tennis

The STMA girls traveled to Glencoe-Silver Lake and played very well going 2-1.

They lost to top 10 ranked Mounds View 1-6, but then bounced back to beat Mpls Washburn 5-2, and 4-3 over a very strong Glencoe Silver Lake team.

In the first round Freshmen #4 singles player Alli Hinz won 6-1, 5-7, and 10-6 in the 3rd set tie breaker.

“We also had very close matches at #2 singles Jolene Duda 5-7, 4-6 and #1 doubles Maddie Schopf / Emily Tschida 3-6, 6-7 in a tiebreaker,” coach Jim Riles said. “The second round against Washburn we changed up our line up and winning in singles for the Knights were sophomore Rachel Jenkins at #3 winning her first varsity match 6-1, 6-3 and sophomore Brianna Woitalla winning her first match at #4singles 6-3, 6-1. We swept the doubles #1 Jolene Duda / Cory Eull won 6-1, 6-2, #2 doubles Emily Tschida / Maddy Schopf won 6-1, 6-1 and #3 doubles Anne Caron / Emily Solberg won 6-0, 6-2.”

Extra doubles Meghan Winans / Alissa Anderson won 6-0, 6-2. The Knights finished the day with 4-3 win over Glencoe. Winning for the Knights were #2 singles Alli Hinz 7-5, 6-3 and #4 singles Brianna Woitalla 6-3, 6-3. #2 doubles Maddie Schopf / Emily Tschida 6-3, 6-7, (10-5 in 3rd set tie-breaker), and #3 doubles Anne Caron / Emily Solberg 6-3, 6-7, and (10-4 in 3rd set TB). The Knights are now 5-1 on the season.

Friday they traveled to Spring Lake Park for a Quad with Section 5AA teams, which Riles knew would be very close matches.

“First round we lost to a very strong and experienced Rogers team 3-4. Winning the Knights only singles point was Alli Hinz 6-1, 6-1, we won at #1 doubles Maddie Schopf / Emily Tschida 6-1, 5-7, (10-7 TB) and #3 doubles also in a tie-breaker Alissa Anderson / Meghan Winans 6-4, 2-6, (10-8 TB),” Riles said.

The second round the Knights bounced back with a 4-3 win over Spring Lake Park. “We won 3 out of 4 singles matches,” he said.

#2 Jolene Duda won 6-3, 6-3, #3 Cory Eull won 6-2, 6-4, and #4 Alli Hinz won 6-2, 6-0.

“Winning our final point in the match at #3 doubles Seniors Alissa Anderson / Meghan Winans 6-0, 7-5,” Riles said.

In the third round STMA lost a very close match to Blaine 3-4.

“Winning our only point in singles was #4 Alli Hinz 4-6, 6-3, (10-6 TB) she has really stepped and is now 8-1 on the season,” Rile said. “We won at #1 doubles Maddy Schopf / Emily Tschida 6-2, 6-1 and #3 doubles Alissa Anderson / Meghan Winans 6-2, 6-3. Our extra doubles team of Rachel Jenkins / Brianna Woitalla had a great day going 3-0. I was very happy with the effort of all the girls the past 2 days and now we have a week to practice hard and re group for the Mississippi 8 conference season.”

STMA is now 6-3 on the season.
