The rebuilding process officially began for the STMA Knights soccer team Thursday against the Elk River Elks.

The Knights battled, but the Elks drew first blood with a goal by Andy Vail. Elk River scored again at the 18:45 mark on a goal by Dalton Hager (assist from Vail), making the score 2-0.

The Knights would allow one more goal in the second half for a 3-0 final score.

In his first game as Knights head coach, Tomas Rodriguez told his players he did not see the game as a loss at all.

“I’m glad that we even lost, because now we can fix a lot of the problems and really tighten up those problems, and go forward and play other teams that are better, and be confident.”

Rodriguez said that the team would work on fundamentals some more in practice.

The Knights played Moorhead on the road on Friday.

SPUDS THUMP KNIGHTS 4-0

STMA, looking for its first win of the 2014 season, took a road trip to Moorhead to face the Spuds.

Trey Greene had a pair of goals for the Spuds. Nick Nguyen scored a goal and added an assist. Justin Froslie also tallied for Moorhead as the Spuds took the game by a final score of 4-0.

The Knights take a short break before things get really busy. STMA will play five games in the span of a week beginning September 4. Four of five will be home games (Orono, St. Cloud Tech, Monticello, Cambridge-Isanti) with the Knights traveling to St. Francis for the other game.
