This August the Maple Grove and Osseo Libraries are hosting free events for people of all ages.
The Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., is offering these events:
“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. For girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. What We’re Reading: Aug. 5 is “The Old Willis Place: A Ghost Story,” by Hahn, Mary Downing.
“Library Lab for Kids: Harry Potter Diorama,” Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. For kids entering kindergarten to grade six. Love the world of Harry Potter? Join other to create a 3-D miniature scene with castles, wizards and mythical creatures from the series. Materials provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.
“Friends Meeting,” Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m. — Join fellow library enthusiasts to hear what’s happening at Hennepin County Library. Help support the local library by planning and volunteering at book sales, programs, and special events. The Friends look forward to meeting participants. General membership meeting.
“Fantasy and Science Fiction Illustration,” Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. For kids entering grades six to 12. Explore the worlds, creatures and characters of fantasy and science fiction through drawing and illustration. With contemporary illustrations as inspiration, create an imaginative fantasy and sci-fi drawings using a variety of drawing and painting materials. Materials provided. “Paws to Read With an Animal,” Thursday, Aug. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. For kids entering kindergarten to grade two. Volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a certified therapy animal and practice reading aloud. Most libraries host dogs and you can call ahead to see if other animals will be visiting. Presented in collaboration with North Star Therapy Animals.
“Master Gardener: Fall Yard and Garden Care,” Monday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Fall is the time to plant bulbs and to prepare a yard and garden for winter. Find out what to do for lawn, what and when to fertilize, proper techniques for composting, protecting shrubs, winterizing roses and covering perennials. Presented in collaboration with Hennepin County Master Gardeners, University of Minnesota Extension.
Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave., will host these upcoming events:
“Art Out of the Box: Eye Wonder,” Monday, Aug. 4, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-5750. For those entering grades two to five. Discover artists’ secrets and uncover illusions meant to trick the eye by looking closely at art from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (http://new.artsmia.org/). Museum-trained teens will help you make art to hide your own secret messages. Materials provided. Presented in partnership with Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.
“Library Lab for Kids: Comic Book Diary,” Monday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-5750. For kids entering grades four to six. Learn how to make a comic inspired by “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Develop characters and a storyline about life or from an imagination. Materials provided. Presented in collaboration with Minnetonka Center for the Arts; Sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library and MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency).
“Used Book Sale,” Friday, Sept. 5, from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Bargain hunters and book lovers take note: the Friends of the Library will hold a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books are withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public. Funds raised will benefit the library. Book donations accepted at the library beginning Aug. 18.
