Suspect in Maple Grove burglaries arrested

Charged with 3 counts of 1st degree burglary

With the help of the public, Maple Grove Police were able to arrest an adult male in connection to several residential burglaries and thefts from autos. The arrest happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, July 3.

Maple Grove Police officially charged Zachary David Needham, 31, with three counts of first degree burglary on July 8. If he is found guilty the maximum sentence would be 20 years and/or a $3,500 fine for each count.

Police said the city had been experiencing an increase in garage burglaries over the past few weeks. At least eight burglaries happened on the southwest side of Fish Lake. The majority of the crimes occurred around: 6900 to 7200 block of Polaris Lane N., 15100 block of 73rd Place N. and 7300 block of Niagara Lane N.

Needham attempted or forced entry through garage service doors in each case.

Maple Grove Police remind residents to continue to report all suspicious activity by calling 911 and to lock their doors and vehicles.

Police Chief Eric Werner said, “We always want people to call 911, no matter how small something seems. That is what really helps the police department do its job.”

He added that a citizen saw the suspect and called 911 immediately.

“We appreciate the community’s help,” Chief Werner said. “This keeps the community safe.”

Other tips include making sure to close and lock all the doors to the garage, including the door that leads into your home. Another tip is to make sure all vehicles parked in the driveway are locked and the valuables have been removed. Make sure there is not a garage door opener left in a vehicle unlocked in a driveway overnight.
