Area libraries are a blast this July

The Maple Grove and Osseo Libraries will be offering area residents plenty of activities this July. These events will be free.

Upcoming events at the Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., include:

“3-D Printing,” Thursday, July 3, 17 or 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Entering grades six to 12. Learn the basics of 3-D design using Google SketchUp and print a creation. Materials provided.

“Family Storytime,” Tuesdays, July 8 to 29, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. — For children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for young children. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

“Guys Read Kids Book Club,” Wednesday, July 9 and 30, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. What We’re Reading: July 9 is Iron Thunder, by Avi and July 30 is The City of Ember, by DuPrau, Jeanne.

“Teen Anime Club,” Thursday, July 10 and again July 24, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. — For teens. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Used Book Sale,” Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Bargain hunters and book lovers take note: the Friends of the Library will host a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books are withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public. Funds raised will benefit the library. Saturday, July 12, from 3 to 4 p.m. bag sale $5/bag. Book donations accepted at the library.

“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, July 15, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. What We’re Reading: July 15 is Rapunzel’s Revenge, by Hale, Shannon and Aug. 5 is The Old Willis Place: A Ghost Story, by Hahn, Mary Downing.

“Library Lab for Kids: Catapults,” Wednesday, July 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Entering grades four to six. Use real tools – hammers, drills and saws – to build a catapult. Find out how far someone can fling a projectile and take the catapult home for more experimentation. Materials provided. Presented in collaboration with The Works; Sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library and MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency).

“Baby Storytime,” Fridays, July 18 to Aug. 8, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. For children from birth to 24 months and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format designed especially for babies. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

“Library Lab for Kids: Illustrate a Myth,” Tuesday, July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Entering grades four to six. Draw characters and creatures inspired by fantasies, myths, legends and sci-fi. Perfect for Percy Jackson fans! Materials provided. Learn about contemporary installation artists and use their materials and methods as inspiration to transform part of the library into a temporary installation art piece. Materials added. “Senior Surf Day,” Thursday, July 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Learn computer basics, how to navigate and search the Internet and how to access websites of interest to seniors. Get hands-on computer experience with help from representatives of the Senior LinkAge Line. Presented in collaboration with Minnesota Board on Aging and Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.

“Art Out of the Box: Eye Wonder,” Tuesday, July 29, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Entering grades two to five. Discover artists’ secrets and uncover illusions meant to trick the eye by looking closely at art from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (http://new.artsmia.org/). Museum-trained teens will help you make art to hide your own secret messages. Materials provided. Presented in partnership with Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.

“Social Security Online Assistance,” Wednesday, July 30, from 1 to 1:30 p.m.,1:30 to 2 p.m., 2 to 2:30 p.m., 2:30 to 3 p.m., 3 to 3:30 p.m., or 3:30 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-6450. Get help from a Social Security representative in managing online Social Security account and leave with new Internet skills that will save time. This one-on-one help is for claimants and potential beneficiaries. Limit two per session.

 

Osseo Library, 415 Central Avenue, events include:

“Act Out for Kids: Storymaking,” Monday, July 21, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Register online or call 612-543-5750. Entering grades one to two. Explore countless ways to create a story. Using fairy tales and simple acting games, participants will be led by an experienced Guthrie teaching artist to create tales inspired by the twists and turns of imagination. Presented in collaboration with Guthrie Theater.

Folksinger Paul Spring will share his original songs about characters from children’s literature. Join us for this participatory, literary, musical escapade.
