SUN PRESS NEWSPAPERS

Rockford defeated Fridley 3-0 to open the Class 5AA East subsection baseball tournament last week.

Next up for the Rockets is the double elimination part of East Subsection that started Tuesday in Loretto, after this issue went to press.

No. 4 seed Rockford took on top seed Providence Academy. The winner advances to the next round at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, while the loser played at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.

George Faue continued his “fantastic” senior run by pitching a 2-hit complete game shutout against Fridley, striking out a season high 13 batters.

Nick Tully powered the offensive with a triple and a double, driving in a run. Brendon Schumacher and Aaron Pietsch also had two hits each.

Brock Deering had a key hit that drove home a run. Other hits were by Joe Agre, Thomas Reinking and Tommy Traen. Deering ended the game in the last inning with a back-handed stab of the ball at third base and throwing out the runner for the final out.

In the regular season, Tully led the Rockets with a .400 batting average. Next came Reinking .378, Drew Vandehey .341, Deering .333, Traen .326 and Schumacher .304.
