Maple Grove, Osseo Libraries offer summer fun options

Both the Maple Grove and Osseo Libraries will host free activities for kids and adults in June.

The Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., will offer:

“Friends Meeting,” Wednesday, June 4, at 7 p.m. — Join fellow library enthusiasts to hear what’s happening at Hennepin County Library. Help support the library by planning and volunteering at book sales, programs, and special events. The Friends look forward to meeting participants. General membership meeting.

“Social Security Online Assistance,” Wednesday, June 4, at the following time frames 1 to 1:30 p.m.,1:30 to 2 p.m., 2 to 2:30 p.m., 2:30 to 3 p.m., 3 to 3:30 p.m., or 3:30 to 4 p.m. — Register online or call the library. Get help from a Social Security representative in managing online Social Security account and leave with new Internet skills that will save you time. This one-on-one help is for claimants and potential beneficiaries. Limit two per session.

“Self-Defense With the Fight Back Project,” Monday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. — Empowered after surviving a stranger attack by fighting back, founder Angela Champagne-From will teach important survival tips and basic self-defense moves. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Paws to Read With an Animal,” Thursday, June 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Register online or call the library. For kids entering kindergarten to grade two. Volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a certified therapy animal and practice reading aloud. Most libraries host dogs and you can call ahead to see if other animals will be visiting. Presented in collaboration with North Star Therapy Animals.

“Teen Anime Club,” Thursday, June 12, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and again Thursday, June 26, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. — For teens. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Library Lab for Kids: Magic Tree House Art,” Tuesday, June 17, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Register online or call the library. For kids entering kindergarten to grade six. Come on an artistic adventure with Jack and Annie. Create a “magical” tree house pop-up structure and book pages containing drawings of your favorite characters and adventures from the Magic Tree House series. Materials provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“3-D Printing,” Thursday, June 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Registration required, do online or call the library. For kids entering grades six to 12. Learn the basics of 3-D design using Google SketchUp and print your creation. Materials provided.

“Act Out for Teens: Intro to Physical Comedy,” Monday, June 23, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Registration required, do online or call the library. For kids entering grades six to nine. Are you ready to get serious about being funny? An experienced Guthrie teaching artist will help participants explore theater techniques for a wide variety of physical comedy. “Senior Surf Day,” Tuesday, June 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Registration required, do online or call the library. Learn computer basics, how to navigate and search the Internet and how to access websites of interest to seniors. Get hands-on computer experience with help from representatives of the Senior LinkAge Line. Presented in collaboration with Minnesota Board on Aging and Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.

“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, June 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Registration required, do online or call the library. For girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. The Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave. N., will host “Library Lab for Kids: 3-D Tunnel Books” Monday, June 16, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Register online or call the library. For kids entering kindergarten to grade six. Learn how to turn a drawing into a tunnel book. This layered book design is perfect for creating a 3-D scene to go along with a story. Sponsored by Friends of the Osseo Library.
