The defending state champions and third-ranked Elks opened scoring with a run in the fourth but top-ranked Maple Grove tied it in the fifth on a home run by Shannon McMurphy. Elk River had a threat going in the eighth but a strong throw by MG’s Maddie Gordan cut down the potential lead run at the plate and set the stage for Mauch’s heroics in the ninth. Sydney Smith pitched nine innings for the victory.

The Crimson, 16-2 overall and 14-1 in league play, now set sight on defending their Section 5 championship. Seeded first, they open May 20 at home against St. Michael-Albertville or Centennial. The next round is May 21 at home and the semifinals are May 27 at Rice Creek Park in Shoreview and tbe championship games are May 29 at Rice Creek.

The Crimson are eager to continue their successful season.

“We have had great successes because we all started playing when we were young with the help of some great coaches,” Mauch said. “Our team is very hard working and is always trying to get better. As always we are just taking it game by game. It would be great to get back to state again this year.”

Seedings for the section are: 1. Maple Grove, 2. Rogers, 3. Spring Lake Park, 4. Irondale, 5. Osseo, 6. Park Center, 7. Totino Grace, 8. Centennial, 9. STMA, 10. Champlin Park and 11. Blaine.
