The Osseo Orioles swept Champlin Park in a softball doubleheader at Osseo on May 1.
In game one, the Orioles jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the second inning and never looked back. Osseo pounded out 17 hits and didn’t commit a single error. Their fine overall play made a winner out of junior ace Courtney Calkins, who gave another solid performance. Faith Lovcik was a perfect four for four from the plate, Calkins added three hits and Laine Ruska hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs. Taylor Bridgeman, Caroline Meyers and Kelli Auer also had multi-hit games, with Meyers driving in three runs.
Meyers gave a strong pitching effort as Osseo closed out the doubleheader with 4-0 victory. The Orioles gave another stellar defensive effort in support of Meyers, who scattered three hits and struck out six. Ruska led the Orioles from the plate going two for three with a double and an RBI. Auer drove in one run and Allison Tullberg doubled and scored two of the Osseo runs.
The Osseo offense were in top form in a rare Saturday afternoon, May 3, conference game at Elk River and the Orioles defeated the highly-ranked Elks 7-3. The offense was led by junior Maddy Johnson, who had a double and a grand slam, accounting for six RBIs. Ruska and Auer each had a hit and were on base twice each, scoring four of the seven runs. Calkins pitched her way to the win, giving up only one earned run, scattering seven hits and striking out three Elks.
The Orioles next take on No. 1 ranked Maple Grove Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. for the annual Osseo-Maple Grove Softball Extravaganza. The game will be played at Maple Grove Junior High.
