Maple Grove softballers surge to No. 1 state ranking

For the second time in the program’s history, the Maple Grove softball team is ranked No. 1 in the state.

The Crimson are off to an 8-1 start. Junior Sydney Smith leads the team with her stellar pitching and hitting and teammates Jordan Mauch, Sammi Sadler, Megan Mulchrone and Sarah Southorn have provided solid all-around play. Maple Grove’s only setback was a 5-3 loss at Eastview in the Eastview Tournament last Saturday. The Crimson defeated Hopkins 9-5 and Eden Prairie 6-1 in the tournament.

The last time Maple Grove achieved the No. 1 ranking was in 2012. The Crimson went on to the state championship game where they lost to Stillwater.

Maple Grove next hosts Osseo Friday, May 9, as part of the annual Osseo Maple Grove Softball Extravaganza. The Orioles are coming off a win at defending state champion Elk River last Saturday.

The Crimson’s match against the Elks last week was cancelled because of rain. It has been rescheduled for May 15.
