STMA tennis wins home opener

The STMA Tennis team won their home opener 6-1 over Andover on warm, but windy day. I thought we handled the win well and played tough on the big points, which allowed us to win the close matches.

Singles — #1 Jimmy Li lost 4-6, 2-6; #2 John Budde won 6-1, 6-0; #3 Taylor Rothstein won 7-5, 6-2; #4 Aaron Dorland won 7-6, 6-3; #2, 3, and 4 singles are all 3-0 so far this season.

“I thought the doubles are starting to communicate and move better as a team,” coach Jim Riles said.

The team traveled to Monticello for a tough conference match and won 5-2.

Singles — #1 Jimmy Li won 6-4, 7-5 Best match so far. He really battled and played consistent tennis. “He has really stepped up for a 9th grader having to play at #1,” Riles said.

“I feel as a team we have been mentally tough on the big points, but we still need to work on our consistency and our serving needs to improve,” Riles said. “Higher percentage of first serves in and fewer double faults. It has been a great start to the season 2-0 in conference and 4-0 on the season. This week we will be looking to get our #1 player Denver Robak back from injury, which should make us stronger and a deeper team. We will play Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and our STMA tri is on Saturday.”
