CROSS volunteer shares story

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month

CROSS has countless volunteers and we appreciate them all. Volunteers supported CROSS with nearly 28,000 hours of service during 2013.

Rachael, a CROSS volunteer for over five years tells her story.

Rachael, a widow for about five years now, was looking for something to do in her community. She had heard about CROSS, yet had no idea where they were or even the help they might need. One morning while out shopping in downtown Rogers, the CROSS van passed Rachael and she decided to follow it to find out where CROSS was located.

Once she entered the CROSS building, she found that everyone was extremely appreciative to meet her and she started working that very day. Rachael has been volunteering at CROSS two to three days a week ever since. She enjoys helping the clients at CROSS. One example Rachael gave of helping others was simply showing a client where a certain food items were located.  She has learned not to take people for granted and that a simple act of kindness, even a smile goes a long way.

Rachael also joined a widowers’ group at her church finding a whole new group of friends. She loves traveling and can be found at many community events with her friends and family.

Rachael was married for 51 years, has three children, six grand children, and seven great-grand children. She ran a home daycare while raising her children. She then took a job cooking in the school district for a few years, and then moved on to a full-time position as a customer service associate for 15 years before retiring.

Her life experience and her incredibly kind attitude about people has made Rachael a core member of the CROSS volunteer team.

Rachael said, “I can’t think of not coming to CROSS every week.”

This is only one story of one volunteer. CROSS has many volunteers and always has room for more. If anyone is interested in volunteering and finding new friends, please contact CROSS at 763-425-1050 for more information.
