The Maple Grove Crimson showed why they are picked the second-ranked softball team in pre-season polls when they opened the 2014 season with three wins last week.

Maple Grove traveled to Park Center on April 10 and came away with a 6-0 win. Senior catcher Jordan Mauch went two for three and drove in two runs and junior pitcher Sydney Smith threw a shutout. Smith, Sarah Southorn and Megan Mulchrone each contributed a hit.

The Crimson opened their home schedule by blanking Champlin Park 8-0 April 11. Smith threw a two-hitter and struck out 15 Rebels. Smith and Sam Sadler each had three hits and Mauch two to lead the eight-hit Crimson attack.

Mauch cracked a two-run home run in the first inning and Smith made it stand in a 3-1 home win over Anoka on April 14. Mulchrone drove in the other Crimson run.

The Crimson next host non-conference rival Minnetonka Thursday, April 24.
