STMA tennis opens with 2 road wins

The STMA tennis team opened the season with two road wins over St. Cloud Apollo 6-1 and 6-1 over Cambridge-Isanti in the conference opener.

“I thought a lot of our players really stepped up for us with our #1 player Denver Robak out with a bad ankle,” coach Jim Riles said. “Apollo match was really close in the singles, but our experience in doubles really showed in those matches.”

 

Singles

#1 Jimmy Li lost 2-6, 5-7; #2 John Budde won 6-0, 6-4; #3 Taylor Rothstein won 6-4, 6-4; #4 Aaron Dorland won 5-7, 7-6 and 13-11 in a 3rd set tie-breaker

 

Doubles

#1 Zach House/Joe Hebeisen won 6-0, 6-0; #2 Josh Alexander/Cody Jones won 6-2, 6-0; #3 Grant Moser/Dylan Smith won 6-0, 6-1; #4 Zander Nagengast/Jake Peterson won 6-0, 6-0

 

“It was a strong opening match and I liked how we adjusted to the strong wind conditions,” Riles said.

 

Cambridge-Isanti

After traveling for an hour we were not ready to play at the start of the match. We lost the first set at #1, #3, #4 singles and were down 0-5 at #3 double, but battled back to win all those matches. Great job, by the team to get things figured out and not to give up.

“Great opening conference win and the boys really battled back after being down early,” Riles said.
