Even the losses of two conference leaders from last season can dampen Maple Grove boys’ golf coach John Petterson’s outlook for the 2014 season.
“The Crimson will again be strong,” Petterson said. “The reining conference champs will return a strong roster after having lost last year’s conference scoring leaders Jackson Lanou and Jake Herdine to division one college golf.”
Senior captain Nick Adams, a returning two-year all conference player, will lead the team into the early tournament season. He has signed with University of North Dakota.
Sophomore Sam Franklin returns for his third varsity season, while juniors Parker Hill and Pierce Lanou will likely round out the top four spots.
Juniors Ben Nelson and Christian Stensgard are in good position to earn varsity spots, having led the Crimson junior varsity to a conference championship for two consecutive year. Maple Grove had try-outs planned for early April, and will determine the roster for their two teams upon completion.
Although nobody has established a record this early in the season, Petterson would not be surprised to see any of the top four Crimson establish themselves in the top 10 scorers in the North West Suburban Conference. Last year’s team place first in the Bunker Hills Invitational Tournament as well as four of the six conference matches throughout the season. Maple Grove was runner up in the section last year. Petterson looks for more success this season.
“Early season predictions have Maple Grove and Blaine as the leaders in the conference this year,” he said. “One never really knows, because Osseo has strength in Dayton Federly and JJ Miller, and Elk River usually plays tough.”
Conference matches are scheduled to begin April 24 at Northfork. Maple Grove hosts its conference match April 28 at Rush Creek.
